Is it too late to begin taking formal dance classes (ballet, modern, hip-hop, etc.)?
I've never danced in my life, not a bit. However, I've started taking ballet classes at the Broadway Dance Center as a part of their Absolute Beginners Workshop. People say that it is great that I've started, that I'm male, tall (6'4"), and ready to learn. The thing I'm wondering is: if I start and continue studying dance, how good could I possibly get? Is it too late for me to be as fluent a dancer as those guys that started dancing from 10-15 years old? I have friends and I went to school with dancers as well... people that started around those ages. They're very flexible, graceful, and fluid. Splits, turns and balance are no where near an issue. I'd love to get to that point some time in the future, but is it still physically possible at this age? (***One thing I wish I could do is balance myself on one foot and point my other foot straight up in the air... making a really nice vertical line with both legs from floor to ceiling -- that's sooo cool!) - It's NEVER to late to learn ANYTHING- Good luck- that sounds like fun!
- You might not be able to get to their ability. But if you are really dedicated you probably can get pretty far.
- its never to late to try something new never if you want something go for it regardless of how old you are or what ever it is.
- it is never to late to start dancing. no one can promise you that you will get good fast. but after a while you will get better. there is a small chance that you would be as good as other dances who have been dancing for years. it might take a few years before you reach their level. i hope i have helped i love to dance and love to see others with my passion.
- Flexibility can be achieved at any age with practice and careful workouts. talk to your instructors and they will give you pointers and exercises to do to help you achieve it. I was pregnant and still the most flexible person in my class, so body has little to do with it as long as your healthy and willing to hurt just a little. Good luck with dance classes, keep it fun.
- it is very hard to get flexible again after a while so the chances of getting ur foot to the ceiling is slim.
- It is never too late to start dancing. I have started a lifelong dream of dancing ballet at the age of 30. Everyone in my family laughed at me. But I was dedicated and I have now finished my second year in ballet. After the third I will have my diploma. People will always put you down but honestly what do they know. You might be the exception that confirms the rule. That's what my teacher told me. And beleive in yourself with all your might. Dreams can become real but you have to start somewhere. And about talent... Don't think about who's better than you. If you take classes its to better and perfect yourself so you can bring your own colors to the dance. Many people know how to dance and I've often seen people dance better at a club than on stage. Believe me, I've been chosen at school for the lead in this year's final show and that's a first, since the other girls are not older than 19. All you need is 1-Talent 2-Passion 3-dedication and comitment. It is only up to you to push yourself to the max and bring life to the dance.
- I don't know how old you are, but as long as you aren't a senior you should be able to get pretty good. I think the biggest problem with people who do not start when they are young is that they lack dedication. If you are willing to be as committed to dancing as your friends are, you will get very good like them. On days that you don't have dance class, you should always go over the routines and stretch to keep up your flexibility. Also, ask your friends for tips. And don't feel bad about asking, they had to ask for help too! As far as the holding the leg to the ceiling thing goes, stretch so you can do the splits on the ground (by stretching and then going down as far as you can keeping your legs straight as well as aligned and holding it there for ten seconds everyday... this method works miracles) and then keep your leg up as high as it will go for a little while every day until it goes to the ceiling! Good luck!
- Some very dedicated people start before they learn how to even walk and run. Yup, toddlers. Very, very dedicated, so if you want to match up to their standards, you're going to have to work HARD. ("Slam against what seems impossible until you fall to pieces." -Kanae) Anywho. We all start somewhere. Start at those beginner clubs where people learn formal dancing for fun or to waste time. Those people don't take things too seriously, but there you get to learn some basics, I guess. If you want to dance as nice and pretty as those with lots of years and years of experience, then . . . . you've got work to do, my friend. Set a goal. It doesn't matter if it's so hard and scary and so far away, one day you'll do it. Just not tomorrow. =) Hope a put some words of motivation in there, and good luck!
- Never! You can always start dance. With enough dedication and practice you can become really skilled in time.
- i say go for it you'll always be successful if you have the passion and dedication to it! Good luck
- It is never too late to start dancing! The lead male dancer at my Ballet Company didn't start ballet untill he was 20 and he is amazing! Keep going and good luck!
